Tomatoes
Tomatoes are such a rewarding crop, and growing multiple varieties opens up a whole world of flavors, colors, and uses.
There are heirlooms, cherry tomatoes, canning tomatoes, etc
Once the tomatoes start growing indoor the windows could be blocking the UV rays, once the tomato plants start coming out of the grow, I would suggest moving the plants outside and into a greenhouse.
If you delay and the tomatoes getting legging. There is an easy fix. You want to be careful and replant the tomatoes.
You will be re-planting by lowing the stems into the dirt leaving only the top leaves above the ground.
In March I will move them into a bigger container. First, I remove all the leaves except the top ones and then bury the stems into the dirt so only the top leaves a showing.
I do this because it will helps the tomatoes get stronger roots.
When they are ready to transplant in late April or early May. The tomato plants are growing. I will usually have the green containers hold water so that I do not have to remember to water all the time. The dirt will soak up the water from the green container.
When the plants are ready to plant, space them out to see if you like the placement before you start digging.
The best tool my husband bought me was an auger, it makes creating deep holes fast.
When I plant the tomatoes, I again remove all the leaves from the stems except the top ones, which means you need a deep hole for the stem.
This again will ensure the stems will be strong.
Once the holes are made with the auger I sprinkle in bone meal, this also helps the stems.
After everything is planted, water.
Pruning Tomatoes:
Once the tomato plant start growing I ensure that the tomatoes leaves are not touching the dirt. If they do, I remove them. Other than that I left the tomato plant grow as it will. I have had tomato plants grow so tall they go over the fence.
